What is SUS436L?
SUS436L is a Japanese low-carbon, Ti/Nb-stabilized 18Cr-1Mo ferritic stainless whose stabilization suppresses sensitization and gives better weldability and formability than standard 436. It is chosen for chloride and exhaust-gas corrosion resistance at lower cost and without nickel compared with austenitic grades, and is supplied mainly as 2B, BA, No.1 and No.4 cold-rolled sheet and coil, plus 1/4H and 1/2H tempers and as-welded tube. Annealed properties are about 300 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and 155 HB (80 HRB). Service is limited to roughly 850 °C, machinability (55) and ferritic toughness in thick sections trail 304, and 444 or 316L are the step up where more pitting resistance is needed. SUS436L has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). SUS436L has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 68% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with SUS436L
Is SUS436L easy to machine?
Cuts more freely than 304 (low work hardening) but is gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, rigid setups, moderate speeds and generous flood coolant; avoid dwelling to prevent smearing.
Can SUS436L be welded?
Excellent for a ferritic: GTAW/laser/resistance welding with no filler or with 316L/309L filler; keep heat input and interpass temperature low to limit HAZ grain coarsening, use Ar (no N2) shielding, no post-weld anneal needed on thin gauge.
Can SUS436L be formed, bent or molded?
Deep-drawing sheet with high r-value and low ridging/roping tendency; springback lower than austenitics, but limit stretch-forming severity and radii below 1t in the transverse direction.
