What is 1.4011?
1.4011 (GX12Cr12, ASTM A743 Gr. CA15, UNS J91150) is the European 12% chromium cast martensitic stainless steel, hardenable by austenitising, quenching and tempering. It serves pump casings, valve bodies and trim, turbine and compressor parts, normally supplied normalised-and-tempered or quenched-and-tempered at about 550 MPa yield, 760 MPa tensile, 22% elongation and 225 HB (20 HRC), with service to 650 °C. Corrosion resistance is the lowest in this family (score 40) and welding needs 200–300 °C preheat with a 620–700 °C post-weld temper; choose 1.4008/CA15M for Mo-bearing media or 1.4317/CA6NM where weldability matters. 1.4011 has a density of 7.61 g/cm³ (0.275 lb/in³), lighter than 96% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 1.4011 has a yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — stronger than 83% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4011
Is 1.4011 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed or high-tempered state with rigid setups, sharp carbide tooling and moderate speeds (~60–100 m/min); the material work-hardens and gets gummy if feeds are too light.
Can 1.4011 be welded?
Weldable with matching 410 or austenitic 309/316 filler but needs 200–300 °C preheat, interpass control and a post-weld temper at 620–700 °C to avoid hard, cracking-prone HAZ martensite.
Can 1.4011 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand or investment cast with generous feeding; avoid abrupt section changes to limit hot tearing and quench cracking, and always homogenise/temper after hardening.
