What is 1.4029?
1.4029 (X29CrS13) is the sulphurised free-machining counterpart of 1.4028, a 13% Cr martensitic stainless with about 0.2% S added to break chips; machinability rates 65 against 50 for the unsulphurised grade. It is a turning-bar grade for high-volume screw-machine parts that still need hardening, supplied in +A, +C, +QT750, +QT800, +QT850 and a hardened low-temper condition, with default values near 450 MPa yield, 740 MPa tensile, 15% elongation and 215 HB and service to 400 °C. The sulphides cut corrosion resistance (score 22) and formability (score 25), and the grade is effectively unweldable; use 1.4028 where corrosion or weld integrity matters. 1.4029 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4029 has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 740 MPa (107 ksi) — stronger than 70% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 215 GPa (31.2 Msi).

Working with 1.4029
Is 1.4029 easy to machine?
Excellent for a stainless: carbide or HSS, sharp positive geometry, 90–140 m/min in +A; sulfides give short chips and long tool life, but tool pressure rises sharply above 28 HRC.
Can 1.4029 be welded?
Not recommended — high carbon plus 0.2 % S causes hot cracking and brittle martensite; if unavoidable, preheat 250–300 °C, 309/410NiMo filler, immediate 700–750 °C temper.
Can 1.4029 be formed, bent or molded?
Essentially a machining bar grade; cold bending, heading or deep drawing will crack — hot form 1100–850 °C then slow cool and re-anneal.

What surface finishes work on 1.4029?
Passivate in nitric acid after machining (sulfide pits bleed rust otherwise), hard chrome or nitriding for wear; high-gloss polishing is poor because MnS stringers pull out.
