| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Double temper (≈670 °C + ≈600 °C) for maximum toughness | Choose for hydro-turbine runner and pump-casing repairs requiring low-temperature CVN toughness; the second temper conditions the reformed austenite and gives the highest impact energy at moderate strength. | 660 | 820 | 22 | 26 HRC | — |
Normalized and tempered | Used when a repaired CA6NM/ZG04Cr13Ni4Mo casting receives the complete production heat treatment, giving weld metal properties matched to the base casting. | 680 | 830 | 20 | 27 HRC | 3 % IACS |
post-weld tempered 565–620 °C (single temper) | Standard AWS A5.9 qualification condition — tempered once at ~595 °C to soften the martensite and meet 760 MPa min tensile with good ductility. | 740 | 880 | 19 | 30 HRC | — |
AWDefault As-welded deposit | Default deposit condition straight from the arc — highest strength and hardness, lowest toughness; acceptable for build-up layers that will be machined or later tempered. | 830 | 950 | 14 | 38 HRC | — |
What is ER410NiMo?
ER410NiMo is a nickel- and molybdenum-modified 13Cr martensitic filler wire (UNS S41086) used for 13Cr-4Ni castings such as CA6NM. It offers better toughness and crack resistance than plain ER410, with roughly 830 MPa yield, 950 MPa tensile, 14% elongation and 355 HB (38 HRC) as welded, and is supplied as drawn spooled wire or cut rod. The deposit still needs preheat/interpass control and a 565–620 °C temper, machinability is low (score 22) and service temperature is capped near 400 °C. Use ER410 where matching plain 410 chemistry matters more than toughness. ER410NiMo has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 65% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,440°C (2,624 °F). ER410NiMo has a yield strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) and a tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) — stronger than 97% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with ER410NiMo
Is ER410NiMo easy to machine?
Machine after tempering — as-welded 38 HRC martensite work-hardens and abrades tooling; use rigid setups, coated carbide, low speed/heavy feed and finish-grind sealing surfaces.
Can ER410NiMo be welded?
Preheat/interpass typically 100–160 °C with low-hydrogen shielding (Ar or Ar+2% CO2 for GMAW), keep heat input moderate, cool below Mf (~100 °C) before tempering at 565–620 °C; avoid holding in the 400–500 °C embrittlement range.
Can ER410NiMo be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied only as drawn/spooled wire or cut rod; deposits are shaped by weld build-up and subsequent machining rather than cold forming.

ER410NiMo — frequently asked
What is ER410NiMo used for?
ER410NiMo is typically used for hydro turbine runner repair, CA6NM castings welding and pump impeller repair. In short: tougher than plain ER410; standard CA6NM repair wire; cavitation-resistant weld metal.
What is the yield strength of ER410NiMo?
ER410NiMo has a typical yield strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) and a tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) — stronger than 97% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.
Is ER410NiMo easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (22/100, worse than 95% of stainless steel grades). Machine after tempering — as-welded 38 HRC martensite work-hardens and abrades tooling; use rigid setups, coated carbide, low speed/heavy feed and finish-grind sealing surfaces.
Can ER410NiMo be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). Preheat/interpass typically 100–160 °C with low-hydrogen shielding (Ar or Ar+2% CO2 for GMAW), keep heat input moderate, cool below Mf (~100 °C) before tempering at 565–620 °C; avoid holding in the 400–500 °C embrittlement range.

What is the maximum service temperature of ER410NiMo?
ER410NiMo is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between ER410NiMo-AW and ER410NiMo PWHT-DT?
AW is the default condition — default deposit condition straight from the arc — highest strength and hardness, lowest toughness; acceptable for build-up layers that will be machined or later tempered. PWHT-DT: choose for hydro-turbine runner and pump-casing repairs requiring low-temperature CVN toughness; the second temper conditions the reformed austenite and gives the highest impact energy at moderate strength. Yield strength is 830 MPa in AW versus 660 MPa in PWHT-DT.
