Working with ZL107 J-T6
Is ZL107 easy to machine?
Machines well for a casting alloy thanks to the Cu content and T6 hardness; use PCD or carbide tooling because of the eutectic Si and expect abrasive tool wear.
Can ZL107 be welded?
TIG/MIG repair is possible with 4043/4047 filler but the ~4 % Cu makes it hot-crack sensitive; preheat and re-heat-treat locally repaired structural castings.
Can ZL107 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent fluidity and low hot-tearing tendency in sand and permanent-mould casting; feed heavy sections well and degas the melt to avoid porosity.
What surface finishes work on ZL107?
Takes paint and chromate/phosphate conversion coatings well; anodizing yields only a dark grey film, so use hard-coat only for wear, not appearance.

ZL107 J-T6 — frequently asked
What is ZL107 J-T6 used for?
ZL107 J-T6 is typically used for general machinery castings, housings and brackets. In short: 319-equivalent general workhorse; 200 °C service capability; low hot-tearing tendency.
What is the yield strength of ZL107 J-T6?
ZL107 J-T6 has a typical yield strength of 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) — stronger than 54% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.
Is ZL107 J-T6 easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (68/100, better than 67% of aluminum grades). Machines well for a casting alloy thanks to the Cu content and T6 hardness; use PCD or carbide tooling because of the eutectic Si and expect abrasive tool wear.
Can ZL107 J-T6 be welded?
With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). TIG/MIG repair is possible with 4043/4047 filler but the ~4 % Cu makes it hot-crack sensitive; preheat and re-heat-treat locally repaired structural castings.
What surface finishes work on ZL107 J-T6?
Takes paint and chromate/phosphate conversion coatings well; anodizing yields only a dark grey film, so use hard-coat only for wear, not appearance.
Can ZL107 J-T6 be formed, bent or molded?
