Working with ADC5 F-SR
Is ADC5 easy to machine?
Excellent — Si-free matrix cuts cleanly with polished-flute carbide, high speed and low built-up-edge; chips are stringy so use chipbreaker geometry and coolant.
Can ADC5 be welded?
TIG/MIG weldable with ER5356 filler on low-porosity (vacuum or squeeze) castings; conventional HPDC parts blister from entrapped gas, so mechanical joining or adhesive is preferred.
Can ADC5 be formed, bent or molded?
Hardest of the common die-cast alloys to run: poor fluidity, strong hot-tearing and die-soldering tendency, requires cover-gas/melt protection, higher metal and die temperatures and generous fillets.
What surface finishes work on ADC5?
Best die-cast aluminium for clear or dyed anodizing and bright polishing; also takes chromate-free conversion coats and powder paint well thanks to its high natural corrosion resistance.

ADC5 F-SR — frequently asked
What is ADC5 F-SR used for?
ADC5 F-SR is typically used for marine hardware, food processing equipment and decorative parts. In short: best-anodizing die-cast aluminum; highest corrosion resistance ADC; hardest ADC to cast.
What is the yield strength of ADC5 F-SR?
ADC5 F-SR has a typical yield strength of 170 MPa (24.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) — weaker than 56% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is ADC5 F-SR easy to machine?
Yes — machinability is rated very good (80/100, better than 92% of aluminum grades). Excellent — Si-free matrix cuts cleanly with polished-flute carbide, high speed and low built-up-edge; chips are stringy so use chipbreaker geometry and coolant.
Can ADC5 F-SR be welded?
With care — weldability is rated fair (50/100). TIG/MIG weldable with ER5356 filler on low-porosity (vacuum or squeeze) castings; conventional HPDC parts blister from entrapped gas, so mechanical joining or adhesive is preferred.
What surface finishes work on ADC5 F-SR?

Can ADC5 F-SR be formed, bent or molded?
Hardest of the common die-cast alloys to run: poor fluidity, strong hot-tearing and die-soldering tendency, requires cover-gas/melt protection, higher metal and die temperatures and generous fillets.
What is the maximum service temperature of ADC5 F-SR?
ADC5 F-SR is rated for continuous use to about 130°C (266 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between ADC5-F and ADC5-O?
F is the default condition — standard supply condition for ADC5 high-pressure die castings; Al-Mg alloys are not precipitation hardenable so as-cast properties are used directly. O: used when maximum dimensional stability and SCC resistance are wanted for service above room temperature, accepting a drop in strength. Yield strength is 175 MPa in F versus 130 MPa in O.
