What is A27 Grade 60-30?
ASTM A27 Grade 60-30 is a general-purpose structural cast carbon steel specified to 60 ksi minimum tensile and 30 ksi minimum yield, supplied annealed, normalized, or normalized and tempered. Default values are 260 MPa yield, 485 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation, 131 HB (73 HRB), service to 425 °C and a machinability score of 58. It is chosen for sand-cast frames and brackets where weldability and ductility matter more than strength. It has no corrosion resistance and rusts bare within days; A27 Grade 70-36 is the next step up in strength. A27 Grade 60-30 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). A27 Grade 60-30 has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 485 MPa (70.3 ksi) — weaker than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 203 GPa (29.4 Msi).

Working with A27 Grade 60-30
Is A27 Grade 60-30 easy to machine?
Machines like ~1020–1025 wrought steel at ~65 % of AISI 1212; remove the sand/scale skin with a first heavy cut to protect carbide edges, and expect gummy chips in the annealed condition.
Can A27 Grade 60-30 be welded?
Excellent weldability with SMAW/GMAW/FCAW using E7018-class filler; preheat 100–150 °C for heavy sections and stress-relieve or re-normalize after major weld repair.
Can A27 Grade 60-30 be formed, bent or molded?
Green sand, no-bake or shell molding with generous risering — steel shrinks ~2 % and needs strong feeding; avoid abrupt section changes and hot spots.
