What is G28Mn6?

G28Mn6 (1.1165) is a higher-carbon manganese cast steel that trades weldability for strength and wear resistance, supplied in +N, +QT1 or +QT2 condition. Default-condition values are 340 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 20% elongation and about 180 HB (89 HRB), with service to 400 °C; it is used for heavy structural and railway castings under impact loading. Weldability is the main constraint (score 58, CE ≈ 0.55), requiring 150–250 °C preheat and PWHT on thick sections, and corrosion resistance is negligible (score 12). G24Mn6 is the alternative when higher yield strength with better weld behaviour is preferred. G28Mn6 has a density of 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). G28Mn6 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 76% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with G28Mn6

Is G28Mn6 easy to machine?

Machines like a 1330/30Mn wrought steel — carbide tools, 100–150 m/min in +N, reduce ~30 % in +QT2; remove the cast skin with a heavy first cut to avoid sand/oxide tool wear.

Can G28Mn6 be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen SMAW/FCAW or MAG using E7018-type consumables, but CE ≈ 0.55 demands 150–250 °C preheat/interpass and PWHT at 580–620 °C for thick sections.

Can G28Mn6 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand or investment castings; feed heavy sections with risers and chills, normalize at 880–920 °C or quench from 870–900 °C and temper 550–680 °C to the required QT class.
