What is A217 WC6?
A217 WC6 is a 1.25Cr-0.5Mo cast alloy steel (1.7357, G17CrMo5-5) used for elevated-temperature pressure castings in refinery and power piping. Engineers choose it for creep resistance to about 540 °C at moderate cost, with 345 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation and about 170 HB in the normalized and tempered condition; it is supplied as sand castings such as valve bodies and pump casings. It needs 200–260 °C preheat and 690–720 °C PWHT after welding, and has no inherent corrosion resistance. For hotter or more severe hydrogen service, WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) is the next step. A217 WC6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). A217 WC6 has a yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 75% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with A217 WC6
Is A217 WC6 easy to machine?
Machines like a 4130-class low-alloy steel at ~170 HB — carbide inserts, 120–180 m/min turning, watch for hard skin and residual sand on as-cast surfaces.
Can A217 WC6 be welded?
Weldable with matched E/ER 80S-B2 or E8018-B2 consumables; preheat/interpass 200–260 °C and 690–720 °C PWHT are required to avoid hard HAZ and hydrogen cracking.
Can A217 WC6 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand castings; good fluidity but high solidification shrinkage — needs generous risering and directional solidification, followed by full re-austenitizing heat treatment.
