What is G12MoCrV5-2?
G12MoCrV5-2 (1.7720) is a molybdenum-dominant low-alloy cast steel to EN 10213 with small Cr and V additions, giving useful creep strength for pressure parts at moderately elevated temperature. Typical properties are 340 MPa yield, 570 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation and 175 HB, with service to about 540 °C; it is available in +NT, +QT, annealed, stress-relieved and as-cast conditions. Machinability (55) and weldability (60) are better than the higher-strength Cr-Mo-V cast grades, but welding still requires preheat and PWHT and the alloy offers no corrosion resistance. For higher creep strength at 550 °C, step up to G15CrMoV6-9. G12MoCrV5-2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). G12MoCrV5-2 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) — weaker than 76% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
What is G12MoCrV5-2 used for?
- valve bodies for steam/petrochemical service
- pump casings

Advantages
- High service temperature — 540°C (1,004 °F), better than 93% of steel grades

Working with G12MoCrV5-2
Is G12MoCrV5-2 easy to machine?
Machines like a 0.5 % Mo Cr-Mo steel at 150–200 HB — use coated carbide, moderate speeds and rigid setups; rough-machine before final tempering where possible and expect abrasive cast skin on the first cut.
Can G12MoCrV5-2 be welded?
Weldable with matched Cr-Mo-V or 1.25Cr-0.5Mo filler (SMAW/GTAW/SAW) using 200–250 °C preheat, controlled interpass temperature and 690–740 °C post-weld heat treatment to avoid hard HAZ and reheat cracking.
Can G12MoCrV5-2 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand or investment castings — design generous fillets and directional solidification with risers/chills; the low-C composition has good fluidity but needs full normalize-and-temper to homogenize dendritic structure.
