What is G35CrNiMo6-6?

G35CrNiMo6-6 (1.6579) is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum cast alloy steel in the same alloy family as wrought 4340, supplied in +N, +QT1 and +QT2. It is selected when heavy-section castings need high strength with good toughness after heat treatment: the default condition gives 740 MPa yield, 900 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and 285 HB (30 HRC), with service to 350 °C. Machinability (35) and weldability (28) are both low, cold cracking risk is high, and there is no corrosion resistance, so painting or plating is required. For welded fabrications, G20NiMoCr4 is a more forgiving cast grade. G35CrNiMo6-6 has a density of 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). G35CrNiMo6-6 has a yield strength of 740 MPa (107 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 83% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with G35CrNiMo6-6

Is G35CrNiMo6-6 easy to machine?

Machine in +N or after tempering with coated carbide, rigid setups and modest speeds; expect abrasive scale and variable skin on castings — rough before final Q&T where possible.

Can G35CrNiMo6-6 be welded?

Weldable only with qualified procedure: low-hydrogen consumables, 200–300 °C preheat and interpass, and post-weld temper below the original tempering temperature; cold cracking risk is high.

Can G35CrNiMo6-6 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand or investment castings — design generous fillets, uniform walls and risering to avoid hot tears; no cold forming.
