What is SCCrM1?
SCCrM1 is a chromium-molybdenum cast alloy steel in the JIS G5111 family, developing its strength and toughness through heat treatment of the casting. Default properties are 640 MPa yield, 830 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and about 240 HB (23 HRC); conditions on file include annealed, normalized-and-tempered, quenched-and-tempered (including 30–35 HRC) and stress relieved, in sand or shell cast form. Limits are roughly 400 °C maximum service temperature, no inherent corrosion resistance, and only moderate machinability and weldability (both scored 45), so preheat and controlled cutting speeds are needed. SCCrM3 is the next step up in strength. SCCrM1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). SCCrM1 has a yield strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 79% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with SCCrM1
Is SCCrM1 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed or N+T condition where possible; at 240 HB use rigid setups, coated carbide, 80–140 m/min and watch for hard spots and residual sand skin.
Can SCCrM1 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen E/ER 80S-D2 or matching Cr-Mo filler; preheat 200–300 °C, keep interpass temperature and apply post-weld temper/stress relief at 600–650 °C.
Can SCCrM1 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand or shell cast with generous risering and 2 % shrink allowance; avoid abrupt section changes, and always heat treat (N+T or Q&T) before service.

SCCrM1 — frequently asked
What is SCCrM1 used for?
SCCrM1 is typically used for machine tool bases, gear housings and heavy structural castings. In short: baseline JIS Cr-Mo casting; weldable with preheat; tougher than plain cast steel.
What is the yield strength of SCCrM1?
SCCrM1 has a typical yield strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 79% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
