What is A352 Grade LC1?
ASTM A352 Grade LC1 (UNS J12522) is a carbon-1/2Mo steel casting from the A352 low-temperature pressure-casting family, intended for pressure-containing parts down to about −46 °C (−50 °F). Default properties are 285 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and 150 HB, with service to 450 °C and a weldability rating of 72; conditions on file are N+T and Q+T. It is a plain low-alloy steel with no corrosion resistance and rusts quickly if left bare, and weld repairs need 595–650 °C PWHT to restore −59 °C toughness. Nickel-bearing LC-series grades are the step down in temperature. A352 Grade LC1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). A352 Grade LC1 has a yield strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 89% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with A352 Grade LC1
Is A352 Grade LC1 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized low-alloy carbon steel at ~60% of AISI 1212; use rigid setups and watch for hard spots or sand inclusions at the as-cast skin.
Can A352 Grade LC1 be welded?
Readily weldable with matching C-Mo (E/ER80S-D2, E7018-A1) consumables; preheat 95–150 °C for heavy sections and PWHT at 595–650 °C to restore −59 °C toughness after weld repair.
Can A352 Grade LC1 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand-cast grade with good fluidity and moderate shrinkage; risers and directional solidification needed to keep radiographic soundness in valve-body sections.
