What is WC6?
WC6 is a 1.25Cr-0.5Mo cast steel in the ASTM A217 family, supplied normalized and tempered, quenched and tempered, or annealed, and it is the most commonly stocked Cr-Mo casting grade for valve bodies and fittings. It is used in power and petrochemical service up to about 470 °C, with 340 MPa yield, 530 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and about 170 HB in the default condition. Machinability rates about 55 and weldability about 65, so preheat and high-temperature PWHT are mandatory. It has no corrosion resistance; move to WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) when service temperature exceeds its range. WC6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). WC6 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) — weaker than 76% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with WC6
Is WC6 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 4130-class steel; carbide tooling at moderate speed, watch for hard spots and sand inclusions on as-cast surfaces.
Can WC6 be welded?
P-No.4 material: preheat 150–200 °C, use E8018-B2/ER80S-B2 filler, PWHT 675–730 °C to restore toughness and meet code.
Can WC6 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand castings; give generous fillets and directional solidification with risers/chills to avoid shrinkage in heavy valve sections.
