What is GS240?
GS240 (1.0455) is a general-purpose cast carbon steel of medium strength, historically designated under earlier DIN standards and available as-cast, annealed, normalized, normalized-and-tempered, quenched-and-tempered or stress-relieved. Default values are 265 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 23 % elongation and about 150 HB (80 HRB), with a weldability score of 85, making it a standard choice for pressure-containing bodies and machinery castings. Maximum service temperature is 400 °C and there is no inherent corrosion resistance, so coatings are mandatory; GE270 offers more strength at similar weldability. GS240 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). GS240 has a yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 23% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with GS240
Is GS240 easy to machine?
Machines like a normalized 1020–1025 steel at roughly 65 % of AISI 1212; use coated carbide, 120–200 m/min turning, and take a first cut deep enough to get under any casting skin, sand inclusions or chill.
Can GS240 be welded?
Very good weldability (C ≈ 0.20 %, CEV ≈ 0.40) with E7018/ER70S-6 consumables; preheat 100–150 °C for sections over ~30 mm and stress-relieve at 550–620 °C after major weld repair.
Can GS240 be formed, bent or molded?
Green-sand, furan no-bake or shell moulding with generous risering (steel shrinkage ≈ 2 %); pour ~1560–1600 °C, fully deoxidize with Al, and normalize after knock-out to break up the coarse as-cast structure.

What surface finishes work on GS240?
Shot-blast to SA 2.5, then phosphate + primer, epoxy or zinc-rich paint; hot-dip galvanizing and zinc/nickel plating are also routine — anodizing does not apply.
