What is SC410?
SC410 is the lowest strength tier of the JIS G5101 general-purpose carbon steel casting series, specified at 410 MPa minimum tensile strength and typically supplied at 245 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation and about 130 HB (72 HRB). Its low carbon content gives good weldability and forgiving weld repair, so it is used for sand- and shell-cast valve bodies, pump casings and machinery housings in service up to about 425 °C, in F, SR, annealed, normalized, N+T and QT conditions. It has no corrosion resistance of its own and must be coated, and strength is modest; its tier corresponds to ASTM WCA, with SC450 the direct step up. SC410 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). SC410 has a yield strength of 245 MPa (35.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 95% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with SC410
Is SC410 easy to machine?
Machines like ~0.3 %C carbon steel (≈65 % of AISI 1212); anneal or normalize first and expect hard skin/sand inclusions on unblasted surfaces.
Can SC410 be welded?
Readily weldable by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with E70xx-class consumables; preheat 100–150 °C on heavy sections and stress relieve at 600–650 °C after major weld repair.
Can SC410 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand- or shell-cast with generous risering (long freezing range, ~2 % solidification shrinkage); design 3–5 mm min wall and avoid abrupt section changes to prevent hot tears.
