Compare all 4 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fully annealed (austenitized, furnace cooled) and tempered | Softest permitted A217 condition; used when maximum machinability and dimensional stability matter more than strength, and for castings needing extensive weld repair. | 300 | 510 | 27 | 155 HB | 7.9 % IACS |
Normalized, tempered and post-weld stress relieved | Condition delivered after weld repair or fabrication welding; PWHT at ~620–690 °C restores toughness in the HAZ with a slight drop in yield strength. | 315 | 535 | 25 | 165 HB | 7.8 % IACS |
N+TDefault Normalized and tempered | Standard commercial condition for A217 WC5 valve bodies and pressure castings; balanced strength and toughness with uniform properties in thick sections. | 330 | 550 | 24 | 170 HB | 7.8 % IACS |
Quenched and tempered | Chosen when higher yield strength and better low-temperature Charpy values are wanted in heavy-wall castings; still meets the same A217 tensile band. | 420 | 605 | 22 | 190 HB | 7.7 % IACS |
What is WC5?
WC5 is a low-alloy Ni-Cr-Mo cast steel in the ASTM A217 family, similar to WC4 but with a different alloy balance, and is available N+T, Q+T, A+T or N+T plus stress relief. It is chosen for pressure parts that need useful toughness at low ambient temperature together with elevated-temperature strength, and is supplied as sand castings for valve bodies, pump casings and piping components. Default properties are 330 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation, about 170 HB and service to 540 °C. It is not corrosion resistant and requires preheat plus PWHT; WC4 is the direct alternative. WC5 has a density of 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). WC5 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 78% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 202 GPa (29.3 Msi).

Working with WC5
Is WC5 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 4130/4140 at ~55–60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups, carbide inserts and moderate speeds, and expect hard spots near unfed sections and chill zones.
Can WC5 be welded?
Weldable with matching low-alloy (E9018-B3/ER80S-D2 class) consumables; preheat 150–250 °C, control interpass temperature, and PWHT at 620–690 °C to avoid HAZ hardening and hydrogen cracking.
Can WC5 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand castings; design generous fillets and directional solidification with risers on the Mo-bearing sections, and always heat treat before pressure testing.
