What is G17NiCrMo13-6?
G17NiCrMo13-6 (1.6781) is a low-carbon, high nickel-chromium-molybdenum cast alloy steel offered in a wide range of conditions (+QT, +QT-heavy, +QT-LT, +QT-high, +N, +NT, +A, +AC, +C). The low carbon content gives a good case-hardening response with a tough core, and the default condition provides 660 MPa yield, 830 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 255 HB (25 HRC), with service to 400 °C. It is not corrosion resistant and needs preheat and post-weld tempering when welded; for higher as-tempered strength without carburising, G30NiCrMo14 is the nearer choice. G17NiCrMo13-6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). G17NiCrMo13-6 has a yield strength of 660 MPa (95.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 80% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with G17NiCrMo13-6
Is G17NiCrMo13-6 easy to machine?
Rough machine in the annealed or normalized state (carbide, 80–140 m/min); after Q&T at 250 HB use rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide and generous coolant, and finish-grind carburised surfaces.
Can G17NiCrMo13-6 be welded?
Weldable with matched low-alloy Ni-Cr-Mo consumables under low-hydrogen conditions: preheat 200–250 °C, interpass control, and post-weld temper below the original tempering temperature; foundry weld repairs are best done before final heat treatment.
Can G17NiCrMo13-6 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand or investment castings — design for progressive solidification with generous fillets and risers; high Ni-Cr-Mo alloy needs low-S/P melt, degassing and full heat treatment to avoid coarse as-cast structure.
