What is WC11?

WC11 is a silicon-modified 1.25Cr-0.5Mo cast steel in the ASTM A217 family, available N+T, Q+T, annealed or air cooled, with elevated-temperature properties above standard WC6. It is the strongest grade of this WC group at 415 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 190 HB, with service to 565 °C, and is supplied as sand castings for valve bodies and steam fittings. Machinability rates about 55 and weldability about 60, so 200–260 °C preheat and 690–730 °C PWHT are required. Unprotected surfaces rust quickly; WC6 is the more available alternative at lower temperature. WC11 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). WC11 has a yield strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 56% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

What is WC11 used for?

  • Steam valve bodies
  • Elevated-temperature pipe fittings
  • Power plant pressure castings
  • Bypass and control valve bodies
  • Pump casings for superheated steam
  • Flanged steam line elbows

Advantages

  • High service temperature — 565°C (1,049 °F), better than 96% of steel grades

P-No. 4 Cr-Mo: preheat 200–260 °C, low-hydrogen E8018-B2/ER80S-B2 consumables, and PWHT at 690–730 °C.

Can WC11 be formed, bent or molded?

Sand-cast with generous risering; normalize + temper after casting and after any weld repair to restore uniform properties.
