What is G9Ni14?
G9Ni14 (EN 1.5638) is a higher-nickel low-temperature cast steel, roughly 13–14 % Ni, supplied quenched and tempered or normalized and tempered for cryogenic pressure service. It carries more strength than G9Ni10 — 400 MPa yield, 560 MPa tensile and 25 % elongation at about 175 HB — with improved toughness at very low service temperatures, in sand or investment castings. Machinability is moderate (score 55) and maximum service temperature is about 300 °C. The steel has no inherent corrosion resistance and costs more than plain carbon-manganese cast steel, so it is used only where low-temperature toughness governs. G9Ni14 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,440°C (2,624 °F). G9Ni14 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 204 GPa (29.6 Msi).

Working with G9Ni14
Is G9Ni14 easy to machine?
Machines like a Q&T low-alloy steel at ~170 HB — sharp carbide inserts, moderate speed, rigid setup; watch for skin scale and casting hard spots.
Can G9Ni14 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen SMAW/GTAW using matching 3.5Ni or Ni-base consumables, preheat 100–150 °C, interpass control and PWHT ~580–620 °C; avoid high heat input to protect −100 °C toughness.
Can G9Ni14 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand or investment castings; needs generous risering (high solidification shrinkage) and full quench-and-temper of the finished shape — cold forming is not a normal route.
