What is GE200?
GE200 (material number 1.0420) is a low-strength general-engineering cast carbon steel supplied as-cast, stress-relieved, annealed, normalized or normalized-and-tempered, with about 230 MPa yield, 440 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and 125 HB. It is used for lightly loaded housings, brackets and structural castings where weldability (CEV ≤ 0.45) and machinability (about 65 % of AISI 1212) matter more than strength. Service is limited to roughly 400 °C, the steel has no corrosion resistance and its low carbon content responds poorly to surface hardening; move to a WCB-class grade when higher strength or pressure certification is required. GE200 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). GE200 has a yield strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — weaker than 97% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 208 GPa (30.2 Msi).

Working with GE200
Is GE200 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 1020–1025 steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds, and expect built-up edge with gummy annealed material — remove the cast skin/sand in a first heavy cut.
Can GE200 be welded?
Very good weldability (C ≤ 0.23, CEV ≤ 0.45): SMAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 100–150 °C only for sections above ~30 mm; post-weld stress relief at 580–620 °C recommended for repair-welded castings.
Can GE200 be formed, bent or molded?
Green-sand, furan or shell moulding all work; fluidity is good but the alloy has ~2 % solidification shrinkage — use generous risers, chills at heavy junctions and normalize afterwards to break up as-cast dendritic grain.

What surface finishes work on GE200?
No inherent corrosion resistance — shot blast, then phosphate + primer/paint, zinc-rich coating or hot-dip galvanizing; takes electroplating and flame/induction hardening poorly (low C), and polishing quality is limited by subsurface porosity.
