What is A217 WC9?

A217 WC9 is a 2.25Cr-1Mo cast alloy steel (1.7379, G17CrMo9-10) with higher chromium than WC6, giving improved creep strength and resistance to high-temperature hydrogen attack. It is specified for sand-cast valve and pump bodies, hydroprocessing castings and steam piping components rated to about 565 °C, with 320 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation and about 170 HB after normalizing and tempering. Machinability is moderate (score 50) and welding needs preheat plus 690–750 °C PWHT. Where 565 °C is not enough, cast C12A (9Cr-1Mo-V) is the alternative. A217 WC9 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). A217 WC9 has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 81% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Chemical Resistance SummaryNot corrosion resistant in wet service — rusts in water and humid air; the 2.25Cr-1Mo chemistry is aimed at high-temperature oxidation, sulphidation and hydrogen attack resistance (API 941 Nelson curves), plus reasonable resistance to high-temperature steam and hydrocarbon streams. Attacked by acids and chloride-bearing aqueous media; sour service requires NACE MR0175 hardness control.

Working with A217 WC9

Is A217 WC9 easy to machine?

In the normalized and tempered condition at about 170 HB machinability is moderate, roughly 55 % of AISI 1212 (score 50). Use coated carbide at moderate speed with heavier feed, and expect faster tool wear where cast skin or entrapped sand remains.

Can A217 WC9 be welded?

Weldable with 200–250 °C preheat and maintained interpass temperature, using B3-class 2.25Cr-1Mo filler such as E9015-B3 or ER90S-B3. Follow with 690–750 °C PWHT for hydrogen removal and stress relief.

Can A217 WC9 be formed, bent or molded?

Produced as sand or resin-sand castings; solidification shrinkage is large, so plan adequate risering and progressive solidification. Finished castings are not cold formed, and any hot straightening must be followed by re-heat-treatment.
