What is G24Mn6?

G24Mn6 (1.1118) is a manganese-alloyed cast carbon steel that delivers higher strength and toughness than plain carbon cast grades, supplied in +QT1, +QT2, +QT3, +N or +A condition. In the default condition it reaches 440 MPa yield, 660 MPa tensile, 18% elongation and about 195 HB (92 HRB), making it a standard choice for structural and mechanical castings that see moderate impact. Limits are a 350 °C service temperature, no corrosion resistance (score 11) and a carbon equivalent of 0.5–0.6 that requires preheat and post-weld tempering (weldability score 62). G17Mn5 is the alternative when weldability and low-temperature notch toughness outrank strength. G24Mn6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). G24Mn6 has a yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 660 MPa (95.7 ksi) — stronger than 50% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

What is G24Mn6 used for?

  • Railway castings
  • Structural machine parts
  • Couplers

Limitations

  • Limited formability — 15/100, worse than 87% of steel grades

Working with G24Mn6

Is G24Mn6 easy to machine?

Machine after heat treatment with carbide tooling at moderate speed; expect abrasive cast skin on the first cut, so take a heavy enough first pass to get under scale and sand inclusions.

Can G24Mn6 be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen SMAW/GMAW consumables; CE ≈ 0.5–0.6 so preheat 150–250 °C, control interpass, and post-weld temper (or re-heat-treat) production and repair welds.

Can G24Mn6 be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or investment cast with adequate risering and chills — solidification shrinkage is high; normalize or re-austenitize to break up as-cast dendritic structure before final Q&T.
