What is 30KhGSL?

30KhGSL is a chromium-manganese-silicon cast alloy steel to GOST 977, supplied as-cast, annealed, normalized, N+T, quenched and tempered (QT500/QT600) or stress relieved. Default properties are 430 MPa yield, 650 MPa tensile, 15 % elongation and about 207 HB, with a machinability score of 48, which suits heavy structural and machine-part castings. Carbon equivalent is high (CE ≈ 0.7–0.8), so weldability is limited and preheat plus post-weld tempering is mandatory; service is capped near 400 °C and there is no corrosion resistance. SCCrM1 is the nearest widely stocked Cr-Mo casting grade. 30KhGSL has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 30KhGSL has a yield strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) — weaker than 51% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

What is 30KhGSL used for?

Limitations

  • Limited formability — 15/100, worse than 87% of steel grades
  • Hard to polish — 45/100, worse than 84% of steel grades

Working with 30KhGSL

Is 30KhGSL easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or N+T condition with carbide tooling at moderate speeds; hard skin and sand inclusions on the as-cast surface dull tools quickly, so take a heavy first cut.

Can 30KhGSL be welded?

Limited weldability (CE ≈ 0.7–0.8): use low-hydrogen consumables, 250–350 °C preheat, controlled interpass and a 600–650 °C post-weld temper to avoid HAZ cracking.

Can 30KhGSL be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or shell casting with generous risering and chills; the Cr-Mn-Si chemistry is hot-tear and shrinkage sensitive, so keep uniform sections and avoid abrupt junctions.

30KhGSL — frequently asked

What is 30KhGSL used for?

30KhGSL is typically used for heavy machinery structural castings, tank/vehicle components and gear blanks. In short: GOST high-strength cast steel; limited weldability, high CE; best machinability in family.

What is the yield strength of 30KhGSL?

30KhGSL has a typical yield strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) — weaker than 51% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is 30KhGSL easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (48/100, worse than 57% of steel grades). Machine in the annealed or N+T condition with carbide tooling at moderate speeds; hard skin and sand inclusions on the as-cast surface dull tools quickly, so take a heavy first cut.

Can 30KhGSL be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (40/100). Limited weldability (CE ≈ 0.7–0.8): use low-hydrogen consumables, 250–350 °C preheat, controlled interpass and a 600–650 °C post-weld temper to avoid HAZ cracking.

What surface finishes work on 30KhGSL?

Not anodizable — protect by shot blasting followed by phosphating, zinc-rich primer/paint or hard chrome/nitriding on wear surfaces.

Can 30KhGSL be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or shell casting with generous risering and chills; the Cr-Mn-Si chemistry is hot-tear and shrinkage sensitive, so keep uniform sections and avoid abrupt junctions.

What is the maximum service temperature of 30KhGSL?

30KhGSL is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 30KhGSL N+T and 30KhGSL-QT500?

N+T is the default condition — standard supply condition for GOST 977 structural castings — balanced strength, ductility and impact toughness. QT500: selected when maximum strength/wear resistance is needed and section sizes are moderate; toughness drops noticeably. Yield strength is 430 MPa in N+T versus 830 MPa in QT500.

How much does 30KhGSL cost?

30KhGSL is a standard-cost steel ($$), cheaper than about 71% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
