Working with ADC1-F

Is ADC1 easy to machine?

Use PCD or polished carbide with high speed / light feed and flood coolant — eutectic Si is abrasive and tool life is roughly half that of ADC12 or 6061.

Can ADC1 be welded?

Fusion welding of die castings is unreliable (entrapped gas blows the weld); use ER4047/ER4145 filler for repair, or design for mechanical/adhesive joining and vacuum die casting when welding is mandatory.

Can ADC1 be formed, bent or molded?

High-pressure die casting only: outstanding fluidity fills walls down to ~1 mm, low shrinkage and excellent pressure tightness; keep die temperature and vacuum/venting controlled to limit porosity.

What surface finishes work on ADC1?

Best finished with chromate-free conversion coating plus powder coat or paint; decorative anodizing is not recommended (high Si gives a grey/blotchy film), and shot blast plus impregnation is common for leak-tight housings.

ADC1-F — frequently asked

What is ADC1-F used for?

ADC1-F is typically used for thin-wall die castings, pressure-tight housings and hydraulic parts. In short: best pressure tightness; thin-wall casting specialist; most abrasive ADC to machine.

What is the yield strength of ADC1-F?

ADC1-F has a typical yield strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) and a tensile strength of 280 MPa (40.6 ksi) — weaker than 68% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ADC1-F easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, worse than 86% of aluminum grades). Use PCD or polished carbide with high speed / light feed and flood coolant — eutectic Si is abrasive and tool life is roughly half that of ADC12 or 6061.

Can ADC1-F be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). Fusion welding of die castings is unreliable (entrapped gas blows the weld); use ER4047/ER4145 filler for repair, or design for mechanical/adhesive joining and vacuum die casting when welding is mandatory.

What surface finishes work on ADC1-F?

Best finished with chromate-free conversion coating plus powder coat or paint; decorative anodizing is not recommended (high Si gives a grey/blotchy film), and shot blast plus impregnation is common for leak-tight housings.

Can ADC1-F be formed, bent or molded?

High-pressure die casting only: outstanding fluidity fills walls down to ~1 mm, low shrinkage and excellent pressure tightness; keep die temperature and vacuum/venting controlled to limit porosity.

What is the maximum service temperature of ADC1-F?

ADC1-F is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ADC1-F and ADC1-T5?

F is the default condition — standard supply condition for ADC1 die castings; no heat treatment, best for thin-wall pressure-tight housings. T5: low-temperature age (≈200–230 °C) used to stabilise dimensions and relieve casting stress before precision machining; small hardness gain, slight ductility loss. Yield strength is 145 MPa in F versus 160 MPa in T5.
