Manufacturability7

444.0-F's machinability is fair (52/100, worse than 63% of aluminum grades); weldability very good (75/100); formability poor (20/100).

Anodizing Responsefair — clear anodize comes out grey/dark and non-uniform because of the ~7 % Si eutectic; hard-coat and chromate conversion coatings work acceptably for protection rather than appearance.

Working with 444.0-F

Is 444.0 easy to machine?

Machines easily but gummy in T4 — use sharp polished-flute carbide (PCD for volume), high speed, low feed pressure and flood coolant to avoid built-up edge; eutectic Si is abrasive to HSS.

Can 444.0 be welded?

Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 4043 or 4047 filler; since the alloy is not age hardenable, the weld/HAZ loses little relative strength, though ductility drops locally.

Can 444.0 be formed, bent or molded?

Permanent-mold (gravity die) casting alloy with excellent fluidity, low hot-tearing and good pressure tightness; degas and grain-refine the melt, and use directional solidification with chills for thick sections.

What surface finishes work on 444.0?

Chromate/phosphate conversion coating or paint is the usual protection; clear anodize turns grey and blotchy from the Si eutectic, hard anodize is acceptable for wear but not for cosmetics; polishing is limited by Si particles.

444.0-F — frequently asked

What is 444.0-F used for?

444.0-F is typically used for automotive housings, instrument cases, structural sand castings requiring toughness and electrical enclosures. In short: ductile Al-7Si casting alloy; non-age-hardening, weld friendly; low-strength, high-elongation option.

What is the yield strength of 444.0-F?

444.0-F has a typical yield strength of 75 MPa (10.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) — weaker than 91% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is 444.0-F easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (52/100, worse than 63% of aluminum grades). Machines easily but gummy in T4 — use sharp polished-flute carbide (PCD for volume), high speed, low feed pressure and flood coolant to avoid built-up edge; eutectic Si is abrasive to HSS.

Can 444.0-F be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (75/100). Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 4043 or 4047 filler; since the alloy is not age hardenable, the weld/HAZ loses little relative strength, though ductility drops locally.

What surface finishes work on 444.0-F?

Can 444.0-F be formed, bent or molded?

Permanent-mold (gravity die) casting alloy with excellent fluidity, low hot-tearing and good pressure tightness; degas and grain-refine the melt, and use directional solidification with chills for thick sections.

What is the maximum service temperature of 444.0-F?

444.0-F is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 444.0-T4 and 444.0-F?

T4 is the default condition — the standard commercial condition for 444.0: maximum ductility and impact/energy absorption with usable strength; pick it for parts that must deform rather than fracture. F: lowest cost condition; use when the part only needs castability and moderate ductility and no heat-treat cycle is justified. Yield strength is 62 MPa in T4 versus 75 MPa in F.
