Chemical & Environmental3

Corrosion resistance is fair (48/100), worse than 58% of aluminum grades.

Corrosion ResistanceFair48/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryGood in dry air and neutral atmospheres; moderate in fresh water; poor in seawater, chlorides and strong acids/alkalis. High Zn makes it susceptible to stress-corrosion and exfoliation-type attack, so painting or chromate/anodic protection is recommended for outdoor service.

Sustainability4

Producing a kilogram of 713.0-T1 takes about 200 MJ of energy and emits 12 kg of CO₂ — less than 60% of aluminum grades. Typical recycled content is 70%.

Manufacturability7

713.0-T1's machinability is very good (70/100, better than 72% of aluminum grades); weldability fair (45/100).

Anodizing Responsefair — protective (clear/chromic) anodizing works, but the Zn/Cu content gives a grey, non-uniform decorative finish; hard-coat is possible with reduced abrasion life.

Working with 713.0-T1

Is 713.0 easy to machine?

Machines well in T1/T5 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and light cuts; chips are short and surface finish is better than for high-Si Al-Si castings.

Can 713.0 be welded?

Fusion welding is only fair — use 4043 or 5356 filler, preheat sparingly, and expect a local strength drop in the HAZ that partially recovers by natural re-aging.

Can 713.0 be formed, bent or molded?

Sand and permanent-mold casting alloy of moderate fluidity and above-average hot-tear tendency; generous fillets, chills and good risering are needed, but no solution treatment or quench is required.

What surface finishes work on 713.0?

Takes paint, chromate conversion and protective anodizing well; decorative bright anodizing is poor and grey because of the high Zn/Cu, and salt-spray exposure requires an applied coating.

713.0-T1 — frequently asked

What is 713.0-T1 used for?

713.0-T1 is typically used for automotive castings, pump housings and machinery components. In short: pressure-tight cast aluminum; no solution treatment required; fair weldability for 7xx.x.

What is the yield strength of 713.0-T1?

713.0-T1 has a typical yield strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) and a tensile strength of 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) — weaker than 68% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is 713.0-T1 easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (70/100, better than 72% of aluminum grades). Machines well in T1/T5 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and light cuts; chips are short and surface finish is better than for high-Si Al-Si castings.

Can 713.0-T1 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (45/100). Fusion welding is only fair — use 4043 or 5356 filler, preheat sparingly, and expect a local strength drop in the HAZ that partially recovers by natural re-aging.

What surface finishes work on 713.0-T1?

Takes paint, chromate conversion and protective anodizing well; decorative bright anodizing is poor and grey because of the high Zn/Cu, and salt-spray exposure requires an applied coating.

Can 713.0-T1 be formed, bent or molded?

Sand and permanent-mold casting alloy of moderate fluidity and above-average hot-tear tendency; generous fillets, chills and good risering are needed, but no solution treatment or quench is required.

What is the maximum service temperature of 713.0-T1?

713.0-T1 is rated for continuous use to about 130°C (266 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 713.0-T5 and 713.0-F?

T5 is the default condition — standard commercial condition: a short low-temperature age stabilises dimensions and gives full strength without solution treatment or quench distortion. F: freshly cast condition before natural aging completes; used when parts will be machined immediately or aged in service. Yield strength is 152 MPa in T5 versus 110 MPa in F.
