Working with GE200 +SR

Is GE200 easy to machine?

Machines like normalized 1020–1025 steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds, and expect built-up edge with gummy annealed material — remove the cast skin/sand in a first heavy cut.

Can GE200 be welded?

Very good weldability (C ≤ 0.23, CEV ≤ 0.45): SMAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 100–150 °C only for sections above ~30 mm; post-weld stress relief at 580–620 °C recommended for repair-welded castings.

Can GE200 be formed, bent or molded?

Green-sand, furan or shell moulding all work; fluidity is good but the alloy has ~2 % solidification shrinkage — use generous risers, chills at heavy junctions and normalize afterwards to break up as-cast dendritic grain.

What surface finishes work on GE200?

No inherent corrosion resistance — shot blast, then phosphate + primer/paint, zinc-rich coating or hot-dip galvanizing; takes electroplating and flame/induction hardening poorly (low C), and polishing quality is limited by subsurface porosity.

GE200 +SR — frequently asked

What is GE200 +SR used for?

GE200 +SR is typically used for machine housings, brackets and low-stress structural castings. In short: most weldable cast carbon steel; low-stress general engineering castings; easy-machining low-carbon casting.

What is the yield strength of GE200 +SR?

GE200 +SR has a typical yield strength of 215 MPa (31.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — weaker than 98% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is GE200 +SR easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (66/100, better than 95% of steel grades). Machines like normalized 1020–1025 steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds, and expect built-up edge with gummy annealed material — remove the cast skin/sand in a first heavy cut.

Can GE200 +SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100).

Can GE200 +SR be formed, bent or molded?

Green-sand, furan or shell moulding all work; fluidity is good but the alloy has ~2 % solidification shrinkage — use generous risers, chills at heavy junctions and normalize afterwards to break up as-cast dendritic grain.

What is the maximum service temperature of GE200 +SR?

GE200 +SR is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between GE200 +N and GE200-F?

+N is the default condition — standard supply condition of EN 10293 GE200 — refined grain, guaranteed 200 MPa yield and 27 J impact. F: cheapest condition for non-critical, lightly loaded parts where coarse as-cast grain and residual stress are acceptable. Yield strength is 230 MPa in +N versus 220 MPa in F.
