Working with GE200-F
Is GE200 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 1020–1025 steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds, and expect built-up edge with gummy annealed material — remove the cast skin/sand in a first heavy cut.
Can GE200 be welded?
Very good weldability (C ≤ 0.23, CEV ≤ 0.45): SMAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 100–150 °C only for sections above ~30 mm; post-weld stress relief at 580–620 °C recommended for repair-welded castings.
Can GE200 be formed, bent or molded?
Green-sand, furan or shell moulding all work; fluidity is good but the alloy has ~2 % solidification shrinkage — use generous risers, chills at heavy junctions and normalize afterwards to break up as-cast dendritic grain.
What surface finishes work on GE200?
No inherent corrosion resistance — shot blast, then phosphate + primer/paint, zinc-rich coating or hot-dip galvanizing; takes electroplating and flame/induction hardening poorly (low C), and polishing quality is limited by subsurface porosity.
