Working with S275N-N

Is S275N easy to machine?

Machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use sharp HSS/carbide, moderate speeds and good chip breaking as gummy ferrite can smear.

Can S275N be welded?

Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with matching C-Mn filler; CEV ≤0.40 means little or no preheat for t≤30 mm, keep heat input controlled to preserve normalized fine grain.

Can S275N be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bends readily to ~2–3 t bend radius with grain-favourable orientation; hot forming above 900 °C should be followed by re-normalizing to restore properties.

What surface finishes work on S275N?

Not anodizable — protect by shot blast plus paint, metallizing or hot-dip galvanizing (low Si keeps galvanized coating well behaved).

S275N-N — frequently asked

What is S275N-N used for?

S275N-N is typically used for bridges, steel structures, offshore platforms and welded fabrications. In short: normalized structural workhorse; weldability rating 92; fine grain, better toughness.

What is the yield strength of S275N-N?

S275N-N has a typical yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 86% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is S275N-N easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (62/100, better than 89% of steel grades). Machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); use sharp HSS/carbide, moderate speeds and good chip breaking as gummy ferrite can smear.

Can S275N-N be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100). Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with matching C-Mn filler; CEV ≤0.40 means little or no preheat for t≤30 mm, keep heat input controlled to preserve normalized fine grain.

What surface finishes work on S275N-N?

Not anodizable — protect by shot blast plus paint, metallizing or hot-dip galvanizing (low Si keeps galvanized coating well behaved).

Can S275N-N be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bends readily to ~2–3 t bend radius with grain-favourable orientation; hot forming above 900 °C should be followed by re-normalizing to restore properties.

What is the maximum service temperature of S275N-N?

S275N-N is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between S275N-N and S275N N-HEAVY?

N is the default condition — standard stocked condition for welded structures needing guaranteed toughness down to -20 °C. N-HEAVY: use when specifying thick normalized plate; minimum yield falls with thickness per EN 10025-3. Yield strength is 300 MPa in N versus 245 MPa in N-HEAVY.
