What is E7024?

E7024 is a heavy iron-powder, rutile-coated SMAW electrode in the AWS A5.1 family, designed for high deposition rate rather than toughness, with weld metal at 430 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation, 165 HB and 85 HRB. Fabricators use it for long mild-steel fillet welds where travel speed and operator ease drive cost, and it is supplied as coated stick electrodes including the higher-toughness E7024-1 classification. It is restricted to flat and horizontal fillet positions (F1/F2) and is not a low-hydrogen electrode, so restrained, thick or higher-carbon joints should use E7018 instead. E7024 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,470°C (2,678 °F). E7024 has a yield strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 51% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E7024

Is E7024 easy to machine?

Deposit machines like hot-rolled mild steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; grind off slag first, and watch for hard spots and entrapped slag when finish-cutting.

Can E7024 be welded?

AC or DC either polarity, drag technique with high amperage; flat and horizontal-fillet only (F1/F2) — not for vertical, overhead, or high-restraint root passes, and not a low-hydrogen electrode.

Can E7024 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; deposit tolerates limited cold straightening/peening but heavy cold bending of weld beads risks toe cracking.

What surface finishes work on E7024?

Self-releasing slag leaves a clean ripple bead; blast or wire-brush and apply zinc-rich primer/paint, as the deposit has no inherent corrosion resistance.

How much does E7024 cost?

E7024 is a budget-cost steel ($), cheaper than about 90% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Can E7024 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; deposit tolerates limited cold straightening/peening but heavy cold bending of weld beads risks toe cracking.

What is the maximum service temperature of E7024?

E7024 is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E7024-AW and E7024-SR?
