What is ER80S-D2?

ER80S-D2 is a Mn-Mo alloyed carbon-steel solid wire (UNS K10945) that deposits higher-strength 80 ksi-class weld metal for structural and pressure vessel steels. Typical values are 520 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation and about 200 HB (93 HRB), with service to 425 °C; it is supplied as copper-coated spooled wire and cut GTAW rod, with AW, AW-M21, PWHT and GTAW-ROD conditions on file. The deposit has no inherent corrosion resistance and must be coated, and heat input must be controlled to keep low-temperature toughness. Use ER80S-Ni1 where improved sub-zero notch toughness is the governing requirement. ER80S-D2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). ER80S-D2 has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 67% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with ER80S-D2

Is ER80S-D2 easy to machine?

Deposited weld metal machines like a normalized HSLA steel (~55 % of AISI 1212); carbide tooling and moderate speeds handle the ~200 HB deposit.

Can ER80S-D2 be welded?

Run with CO₂ or Ar–15/25 % CO₂, DCEP; keep interpass ≤ 250 °C and heat input moderate to preserve -29 °C toughness, and preheat thick or high-carbon-equivalent base metal.

Can ER80S-D2 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn, copper-coated wire on spools or as cut rods; feedability is good but avoid tight liner bends that shave the coating.

What is the yield strength of ER80S-D2?

ER80S-D2 has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 67% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ER80S-D2 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, worse than 53% of steel grades). Deposited weld metal machines like a normalized HSLA steel (~55 % of AISI 1212); carbide tooling and moderate speeds handle the ~200 HB deposit.

Can ER80S-D2 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100). Run with CO₂ or Ar–15/25 % CO₂, DCEP; keep interpass ≤ 250 °C and heat input moderate to preserve -29 °C toughness, and preheat thick or high-carbon-equivalent base metal.
