What is EH14?
EH14 is a higher-manganese submerged-arc wire for carbon and low-alloy steel, specified where extra weld-metal strength or alloy pickup is needed to offset base-metal dilution. Deposits give about 460 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and 185 HB, with service to 400 °C, and it is supplied as cold-drawn copper-coated wire for single, tandem or multi-wire heads. It needs neutral to slightly basic flux and heat-input control to meet the required CVN class, and the bare deposit rusts like mild steel. For general plate work at lower alloy content, EM12K is the usual alternative. EH14 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). EH14 has a yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — stronger than 55% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with EH14
Is EH14 easy to machine?
Deposit machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~60 % of AISI 1212); grind or mill weld caps with sharp carbide and expect harder HAZ zones on thick sections.
Can EH14 be welded?
Designed for submerged arc (single, tandem or multi-wire) with neutral to slightly basic flux; DCEP for most work, keep interpass ≤250 °C and match flux to required CVN class.
Can EH14 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as cold-drawn copper-coated wire — keep cast/helix within spec, store dry to avoid rust and hydrogen pickup in the weld.

How much does EH14 cost?
EH14 is a budget-cost steel ($), cheaper than about 90% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
EH14 — frequently asked
What is EH14 used for?
EH14 is typically used for heavy plate submerged arc welding, pressure vessel fabrication and structural steel. In short: higher-manganese SAW wire; stronger deposit than EM12K; suits multi-wire high dilution.
What is the yield strength of EH14?
EH14 has a typical yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — stronger than 55% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.
Is EH14 easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, better than 62% of steel grades). Deposit machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~60 % of AISI 1212); grind or mill weld caps with sharp carbide and expect harder HAZ zones on thick sections.
Can EH14 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). Designed for submerged arc (single, tandem or multi-wire) with neutral to slightly basic flux; DCEP for most work, keep interpass ≤250 °C and match flux to required CVN class.
What surface finishes work on EH14?

Can EH14 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as cold-drawn copper-coated wire — keep cast/helix within spec, store dry to avoid rust and hydrogen pickup in the weld.
What is the maximum service temperature of EH14?
EH14 is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between EH14-AW and EH14 PWHT?
AW is the default condition — default condition: multi-pass SAW deposit tested as-welded per AWS A5.17; use for general structural and pressure-part welds without PWHT. PWHT: choose when code-required stress relief is applied: strength drops slightly, toughness and dimensional stability improve. Yield strength is 460 MPa in AW versus 430 MPa in PWHT.
