What is ER80S-Ni1?

ER80S-Ni1 is a 1 % nickel alloyed low-alloy steel solid filler wire (UNS K11260) used to weld structural and pressure vessel steels that need improved low-temperature toughness. Typical deposit properties are 520 MPa yield, 610 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and about 190 HB (92 HRB), with service to 400 °C and a machinability rating of 55; AW, AW-GTAW and PWHT conditions are on file. Corrosion behaviour matches the parent carbon steel, so coating is required, and heat input must stay controlled to protect notch toughness. ER80S-Ni2 and Ni3 give higher nickel and better cold-service impact values. ER80S-Ni1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). ER80S-Ni1 has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 610 MPa (88.5 ksi) — stronger than 67% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with ER80S-Ni1

Is ER80S-Ni1 easy to machine?

Deposits machine like normalised low-alloy steel; use sharp carbide, expect work hardening at bead crowns and dress out slag/oxide before finish cuts.

Can ER80S-Ni1 be welded?

Designed as filler: MAG with Ar+15–25 % CO₂ (or 100 % Ar for TIG); keep heat input ~1.0–2.5 kJ/mm, preheat 100–150 °C on thick or restrained joints and limit interpass to ~250 °C to protect low-temperature toughness.

Can ER80S-Ni1 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as copper-coated drawn wire on layer-wound spools; maintain smooth liner and correct drive-roll pressure to avoid coating flake and feed problems.
