What is E6011?
E6011 is a cellulosic AC/DC SMAW electrode in the AWS A5.1 family, essentially the AC-capable counterpart of E6010, with weld metal at 400 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation, 160 HB and 84 HRB. It is chosen for maintenance and farm work because the deep, digging arc cuts through rust, mill scale, paint and galvanizing residue and runs on simple AC transformer welders. It is not a low-hydrogen electrode and is rated to about 400 °C service, so thick, restrained or hydrogen-sensitive joints should be welded with E7018. Where DC power is available and root penetration is the priority, E6010 is the direct alternative. E6011 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). E6011 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E6011
Is E6011 easy to machine?
Deposit machines like mild steel but slag inclusions and hard HAZ zones dull tooling — grind the crown flat before finish cuts.
Can E6011 be welded?
Run AC or DCEP with a tight, whipped arc; deep penetration handles rust, paint and galvanizing residue, but keep hydrogen-sensitive or thick, restrained joints for low-hydrogen E7018 instead.
Can E6011 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product — deposits can be peened or lightly dressed, but avoid severe cold bending across as-welded beads.

What surface finishes work on E6011?
Heavy spatter and coarse ripple require grinding/wire-brushing; then prime and paint or galvanize since bare deposit rusts quickly.

E6011 — frequently asked
What is E6011 used for?
E6011 is typically used for maintenance welding, farm equipment repair and general steel fabrication. In short: runs on AC transformers; tolerates dirty, painted steel; not low-hydrogen.
What is the yield strength of E6011?
E6011 has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.
Is E6011 easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, better than 62% of steel grades). Deposit machines like mild steel but slag inclusions and hard HAZ zones dull tooling — grind the crown flat before finish cuts.
Can E6011 be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Run AC or DCEP with a tight, whipped arc; deep penetration handles rust, paint and galvanizing residue, but keep hydrogen-sensitive or thick, restrained joints for low-hydrogen E7018 instead.

Not a wrought product — deposits can be peened or lightly dressed, but avoid severe cold bending across as-welded beads.
What is the maximum service temperature of E6011?
E6011 is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between E6011-AW and E6011-SR?
