What is E80C-Ni1?

E80C-Ni1 (UNS W21030) is a nominal 1 % nickel composite metal-cored electrode in the low-alloy flux-cored filler family, alloyed to improve notch toughness at sub-zero temperatures. It is used on low-alloy structural and pipeline steels for cold-service fabrication, depositing 510 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation and about 205 HB (94 HRB). Heat input should be capped near 2.0 kJ/mm to protect −40 °C toughness, and the deposit corrodes like plain carbon steel, so priming or galvanizing is needed. E80C-Ni2 and E80C-Ni3 extend toughness to lower temperatures. E80C-Ni1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). E80C-Ni1 has a yield strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — stronger than 65% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E80C-Ni1

Is E80C-Ni1 easy to machine?

Weld cap machines like a normalized low-alloy steel (~50 % of AISI 1212); expect harder, less uniform passes near the fusion line.

Can E80C-Ni1 be welded?

Run with 75–80 % Ar / balance CO₂ (or 100 % CO₂ with slightly lower toughness), DCEP, preheat per CE of the base steel and cap heat input around 2.0 kJ/mm to protect −40 °C toughness.

Can E80C-Ni1 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a formed product; keep interpass temperature ≤150–200 °C and reseal/redry spools to avoid moisture pickup and porosity.
