What is ER80S-Ni2?

ER80S-Ni2 is a 2.25 % nickel alloyed low-alloy steel solid filler wire (UNS K21240) developed for low-temperature toughness in cryogenic and cold-service steel welds. The deposit typically gives 510 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and about 195 HB (92 HRB), with service to 400 °C; AW, PWHT, GTAW-AW and WIRE-CD conditions are on file. Toughness depends on discipline: interpass must stay at or below 150 °C, and the deposit has no inherent corrosion resistance so it must be blasted and coated. ER80S-Ni3 (3.25 % Ni) is the choice when impact requirements go colder still. ER80S-Ni2 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), lighter than 87% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). ER80S-Ni2 has a yield strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — stronger than 65% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with ER80S-Ni2

Is ER80S-Ni2 easy to machine?

Deposit machines like a normalized 550 MPa low-alloy steel — carbide tooling, moderate speeds; expect slightly gummy chips from the Ni content.

Can ER80S-Ni2 be welded?

GMAW with Ar+(5–25 %) CO₂ or GTAW with pure Ar; keep interpass ≤150 °C and heat input moderate to preserve −73 °C toughness, and use low-hydrogen practice on thick or restrained joints.

Can ER80S-Ni2 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn copper-coated wire; keep spools dry and clean feed liners since Ni-alloy wire is sensitive to arc instability from surface contamination.
