What is ER80S-B6?

ER80S-B6 is a 5Cr-0.5Mo martensitic stainless solid filler wire (UNS S50280) used to weld P5 alloy steel components that need elevated-temperature corrosion and creep resistance. After PWHT the deposit gives 505 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 200 HB (93 HRB), with service to 600 °C; it is supplied as drawn spooled wire and cut GTAW rod, with AW, SR705 and PWHT745 conditions on file. The as-welded deposit is hard martensite, so preheat and 730–760 °C PWHT are effectively mandatory, machinability is moderate (45/100) and corrosion resistance (30/100) stays well below austenitic stainless. ER80S-B8 (9Cr-1Mo) is the next step up for hotter P9 lines. ER80S-B6 has a density of 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³), lighter than 91% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). ER80S-B6 has a yield strength of 505 MPa (73.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 64% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with ER80S-B6

Is ER80S-B6 easy to machine?

Machine after PWHT (≤225 HB) with carbide tooling and rigid setups; as-welded martensite at 35+ HRC needs grinding rather than turning.

Can ER80S-B6 be welded?

GMAW/GTAW/SAW with Ar-based shielding; preheat 200–300 °C, interpass ≤350 °C, slow cool and PWHT at 730–760 °C, and keep the wire and joint dry to avoid hydrogen cracking.

Can ER80S-B6 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied only as drawn/copper-free bright wire — no forming of the deposit; avoid cold straightening of un-tempered welds.
