What is E6010?
E6010 is a cellulosic-coated SMAW electrode in the AWS A5.1 family, run on DCEP only, depositing low-carbon weld metal with 400 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and about 155 HB (82 HRB). Its deep, digging arc and fast-freezing slag make it the standard choice for pipeline root passes and vertical-down progression in field construction, and it is supplied as coated stick electrodes in as-welded and stress-relieved condition data. Diffusible hydrogen is high, so heavy-wall or higher-strength steels should be filled and capped with a low-hydrogen electrode such as E7018; deposits are rated to about 400 °C service. E6011 covers the same work on AC transformer power sources. E6010 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). E6010 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E6010
Is E6010 easy to machine?
The deposit is soft low-carbon steel and turns or mills normally, but the bead surface is rough and may contain minor porosity. Grind and dress the weld before finish machining.
Can E6010 be welded?
Use DCEP (DC+) only with a short arc and no weaving; the deep-penetrating arc suits pipe root passes and vertical-down welding. Diffusible hydrogen is high, so switch to low-hydrogen E7018 for fill and cap on heavy wall or higher-strength steel. Electrodes are not baked; only short low-temperature drying if they have absorbed moisture.
Can E6010 be formed, bent or molded?
The electrode itself is not a formed product. Cold bending of weldments should avoid the weld and heat-affected zone; as-welded elongation is about 22–28 %.
