What is E70T-1?

E70T-1 is a gas-shielded rutile flux-cored wire for carbon steel in the AWS A5.20 E7XT family, depositing about 490 MPa yield, 580 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and 185 HB. It is chosen for high deposition rates on flat and horizontal joints in heavy plate work, and is supplied as drawn tubular wire on 15 kg spools. Limits are position (flat and horizontal only), the need for CO₂ or Ar-CO₂ shielding gas, and a deposit with no corrosion resistance. For all-position or gasless field welding use a self-shielded E71T-11 or E71T-8. E70T-1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,470°C (2,678 °F). E70T-1 has a yield strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 580 MPa (84.1 ksi) — stronger than 61% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E70T-1

Is E70T-1 easy to machine?

As-deposited weld metal machines like normalized 1020–1030 steel; remove slag and grind the crown first to avoid chipping carbide on residual oxide.

Can E70T-1 be welded?

DCEP, flat/horizontal only; 20–25 L/min CO₂ or Ar-CO₂, 15–25 mm stickout, keep wire in sealed packaging or re-bake to prevent moisture-induced porosity.

Can E70T-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn tubular wire on 15 kg spools; do not kink or crush the sheath — deformed wire causes feeding faults and arc instability.

What surface finishes work on E70T-1?

Self-releasing rutile slag chips off easily; weld surface must be painted, metallized or galvanized for outdoor service since the deposit has no corrosion resistance.

How much does E70T-1 cost?

E70T-1 is a budget-cost steel ($), cheaper than about 90% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
