Working with E7024-SR

Is E7024 easy to machine?

Deposit machines like hot-rolled mild steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; grind off slag first, and watch for hard spots and entrapped slag when finish-cutting.

Can E7024 be welded?

AC or DC either polarity, drag technique with high amperage; flat and horizontal-fillet only (F1/F2) — not for vertical, overhead, or high-restraint root passes, and not a low-hydrogen electrode.

Can E7024 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; deposit tolerates limited cold straightening/peening but heavy cold bending of weld beads risks toe cracking.

What surface finishes work on E7024?

Self-releasing slag leaves a clean ripple bead; blast or wire-brush and apply zinc-rich primer/paint, as the deposit has no inherent corrosion resistance.

E7024-SR — frequently asked

What is E7024-SR used for?

E7024-SR is typically used for flat position fillet welds, production welding and general mild steel fabrication. In short: highest deposition stick electrode; flat and horizontal fillets only; speed over toughness.

What is the yield strength of E7024-SR?

E7024-SR has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is E7024-SR easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 83% of steel grades). Deposit machines like hot-rolled mild steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; grind off slag first, and watch for hard spots and entrapped slag when finish-cutting.

Can E7024-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). AC or DC either polarity, drag technique with high amperage; flat and horizontal-fillet only (F1/F2) — not for vertical, overhead, or high-restraint root passes, and not a low-hydrogen electrode.

What surface finishes work on E7024-SR?

Can E7024-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product; deposit tolerates limited cold straightening/peening but heavy cold bending of weld beads risks toe cracking.

What is the maximum service temperature of E7024-SR?

E7024-SR is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between E7024-AW and E7024-SR?

AW is the default condition — default condition for structural fillet and flat-position production welding on mild steel; take this for normal design allowables. SR: use when the fabrication is post-weld heat treated for dimensional stability or code compliance; strength drops slightly, ductility rises. Yield strength is 430 MPa in AW versus 400 MPa in SR.
