What is ER70S-3?
ER70S-3 is a copper-coated solid mild-steel wire (ER50-3, YGW11, G2Si1) with moderate Mn-Si deoxidizer content for GMAW, GTAW and submerged arc welding. Typical as-welded deposits give 460 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and about 160 HB (84 HRB), with less silicon island residue than ER70S-6, which helps on multi-pass joints and parts that will be painted. The lower deoxidation means the base metal must be reasonably clean; on rusty or scaled steel, porosity risk rises and ER70S-6 is the better choice. Deposits have no corrosion resistance. ER70S-3 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,470°C (2,678 °F). ER70S-3 has a yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — stronger than 55% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with ER70S-3
Is ER70S-3 easy to machine?
Deposits machine like hot-rolled 1018 (≈60 % of AISI 1212); expect gummy chips, use sharp tools and flood coolant, and dress weld crowns before finish cuts to avoid hard spots in the HAZ.
Can ER70S-3 be welded?
Run DCEP on Ar–CO₂ or CO₂ (GMAW), pure Ar (GTAW) or neutral flux (SAW); base metal must be reasonably free of mill scale, rust and oil because the modest Si content gives limited deoxidation and porosity resistance versus ER70S-6.
Can ER70S-3 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as cold-drawn copper-coated spooled wire or straight rods; keep feed-roll pressure and liner condition good since the softer low-Si wire shaves easily and causes birdnesting.

What surface finishes work on ER70S-3?
Deposits rust readily — grind/blast to remove spatter and mill scale, then apply zinc-rich primer, paint, phosphate or galvanizing; not anodizable, and copper coating residue should be cleaned before painting.
