What is ER80S-B8?
ER80S-B8 is a 9Cr-1Mo martensitic stainless solid filler wire (UNS S50480) matched to P9/T9 alloy steel for high-temperature, corrosion-resistant piping. Typical deposit properties are 490 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 200 HB (16 HRC) with service to 600 °C; conditions on file cover AW, PWHT and N+T. The as-deposited weld is crack-sensitive martensite near 40 HRC, so 200–300 °C preheat and 730–760 °C PWHT are required, machinability is low (38/100) and corrosion resistance (32/100) is limited by the 9 % Cr level. ER80S-B6 (5Cr-0.5Mo) is the lower-alloy alternative where P5 base metal is used. ER80S-B8 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 93% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). ER80S-B8 has a yield strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 61% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with ER80S-B8
Is ER80S-B8 easy to machine?
Machine only after PWHT/tempering; as-deposited martensite at ~40 HRC needs carbide tooling, low speed and rigid setups.
Can ER80S-B8 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW of P9/T9 with 200–300 °C preheat and interpass, low hydrogen practice, slow cooling and mandatory 730–760 °C PWHT to avoid hard, crack-sensitive martensite.
Can ER80S-B8 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as drawn wire or straightened cut lengths; the deposit itself is not cold formed — bend fabrication is done on the base pipe before welding.
