ER70S-B2L tempers and conditions
ER70S-B2L is supplied in 3 conditions, soft to hard. AW is the default FabDigit quotes; the values on this page are for it.
Compare all 3 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
High-temperature temper 730–760 °C | Use when the fabrication receives repeated or extended PWHT (wet H2S / HTHA service) requiring maximum softening and hardness well under 200 HB. | 410 | 520 | 28 | 150 HB | 8.2 % IACS |
PWHT | Standard condition for ASME code Cr-Mo piping: tempers the weld metal, restores toughness and brings hardness below typical 225 HB / 22 HRC limits. | 450 | 560 | 26 | 165 HB | — |
AWDefault As-welded deposit | Pick for tack welds, thin-wall or code-exempt joints where PWHT is impractical — the low-carbon B2L chemistry keeps as-welded hardness and cracking risk down. | 520 | 620 | 22 | 18 HRC | — |
What is ER70S-B2L?
ER70S-B2L (K20500) is a low-carbon 1.25Cr-0.5Mo solid filler wire in the low-alloy steel welding consumable family, used for GTAW and GMAW of P11/P12 chrome-moly piping. The reduced carbon lowers as-welded hardness and underbead cracking risk compared with standard ER70S-B2, while post-weld heat treated deposits typically reach 520 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and 205 HB (95 HRB, 18 HRC) with service to 450 °C. It is supplied as spooled wire and cut TIG rod. The deposit is not corrosion resistant, and PWHT at 690–730 °C is required for code work; ER80S-B2 is the higher-strength alternative where matching tensile is specified. ER70S-B2L has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). ER70S-B2L has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 67% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with ER70S-B2L
Is ER70S-B2L easy to machine?
Machine the deposit after PWHT — as-welded bainitic/martensitic weld metal is abrasive on HSS; use carbide at moderate speed with rigid setup.
Can ER70S-B2L be welded?
GTAW/GMAW of P11/P12 with 150–250 °C preheat, ≤300 °C interpass, dry argon shielding, and PWHT at 690–730 °C; the low-carbon grade tolerates short delays before PWHT better than ER70S-B2.
Can ER70S-B2L be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied only as drawn wire or cut rod; no cold forming of the deposit — bend tests should follow PWHT.
