What is E7018?
E7018 is a low-hydrogen, iron-powder SMAW electrode from the AWS A5.1 family, also listed as J507, D5016, E5015 and E5018, depositing a C-Mn weld metal with 450 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and about 170 HB. Engineers specify it for structural and pressure work where crack resistance governs, because the low weld-metal hydrogen and good notch toughness suit thick, restrained joints and higher-carbon steels; supplied as coated stick electrodes, including E7018-1 and moisture-resistant H4R variants. It must be redried and held in a heated quiver, and deposits are rated to about 400 °C service. Where flat and horizontal fillet deposition speed matters more than toughness, E7024 is the usual alternative. E7018 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,465°C (2,669 °F). E7018 has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — stronger than 52% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E7018
Is E7018 easy to machine?
Weld deposit machines like a normalized C-Mn steel but slag inclusions and hard HAZ can chip carbide edges — grind the cap first and use rigid setups.
Can E7018 be welded?
AC or DCEP, short arc with drag technique, redry 260–430 °C / 1–2 h and keep in a 120 °C quiver; preheat/interpass per AWS D1.1 for thick or higher-carbon steel.
Can E7018 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; deposit can be hammer/needle peened between passes for distortion control but should not be cold formed severely.
