What is E70C-Ni2?

E70C-Ni2 (UNS W22030) is a nickel-alloyed composite cored electrode with about 2 % Ni, depositing 470 MPa yield and 560 MPa tensile metal with 27 % elongation and about 175 HB. Engineers use it where good low-temperature toughness is required on carbon-manganese and low-alloy structural steels; it is supplied as spooled cored wire and classified in mixed-gas (AW-M), CO₂ (AW-C), as-welded and PWHT conditions. Maximum service temperature on file is 400 °C, the deposit rusts like carbon steel, and toughness depends on holding heat input and interpass temperature down. E70C-B2L is the choice instead when elevated-temperature Cr-Mo service is the driver. E70C-Ni2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). E70C-Ni2 has a yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — stronger than 57% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with E70C-Ni2

Is E70C-Ni2 easy to machine?

Weld deposit machines/grinds like normalized low-alloy steel (~60 % of AISI 1212); use carbide tooling and expect variable hardness across bead and HAZ.

Can E70C-Ni2 be welded?

Run DCEP with 75–80 % Ar/CO₂ (M) or CO₂ (C), keep interpass ≤150–250 °C and heat input moderate to protect low-temperature toughness; keep wire dry to avoid hydrogen cracking.

Can E70C-Ni2 be formed, bent or molded?

Not a wrought product — supplied as drawn seamed/seamless cored wire on spools; no forming operations on the deposit beyond weld-cap dressing.
