AMS 2469
Hard Anodic Coating on Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys
Establishes requirements for wear-resistant hard anodic coatings on aluminum and aluminum alloys.
What AMS 2469 specifies
AMS 2469 is SAE's aerospace hard-anodize specification for aluminum parts needing abrasion resistance, hardness, corrosion protection, or electrical insulation. The standard nominal coating is 0.0020 ± 0.0005 in (38–64 µm), although another thickness can be stated by the purchaser. Thickness, coating weight, abrasion, appearance, and process controls are central acceptance features; sealing is selected according to the required corrosion and wear balance. Designers must account for oxide growth, mask precision interfaces, and identify electrical contact locations. PTFE impregnation is an additional purchaser requirement, not an automatic consequence of AMS 2469.
AMS 2469 types and classes
Every designation the document defines, with the thickness it requires and the tests it imposes.
| Designation | Meaning | Thickness | Requirement / test |
|---|---|---|---|
Standard thickness | Default hard anodic coating thickness unless another thickness is specified. | 38–64 µm 1.5–2.5 mil | Thickness, coating weight, and abrasion resistance. |
Specified thickness | Purchaser-defined thickness replacing the standard nominal value. | — | Thickness and applicable performance tests. |

AMS 2469 — frequently asked
What thickness does AMS 2469 use?
The standard nominal requirement is 0.0020 ± 0.0005 in, or 38–64 µm. A different controlled thickness may be stated on the drawing.
Should AMS 2469 hard anodize be sealed?
Sealing improves corrosion resistance but can reduce abrasion performance. State sealed or unsealed according to service rather than leaving the choice implicit.
Does AMS 2469 include PTFE?
No. PTFE impregnation must be added as a separate drawing requirement and coordinated with the processor because it changes friction and sealing behavior.
