ISO 15416
Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques — Bar Code Symbol Print Quality Test Specification — Linear Symbols
Defines measurement and continuous quality grading of linear barcode symbols read by linear scanning methods.
What ISO 15416 specifies
ISO/IEC 15416 is the print-quality verifier standard for linear, one-dimensional barcodes. The 2025 edition retains continuous grades from 4.0 to 0.0 and updates edge-threshold, maximum and minimum reflectance, and continuous-grade calculations. Each scan evaluates decode, minimum reflectance, minimum edge contrast, symbol contrast, modulation, defects, decodability, and quiet zones; the profile grade is governed by the lowest parameter, and the symbol result combines multiple scans. A buyer must state minimum grade, measuring aperture, illumination wavelength or spectrum, and sampling. The standard measures print quality, not adhesive bond or label durability.
ISO 15416 types and classes
Every designation the document defines, with the thickness it requires and the tests it imposes.
| Designation | Meaning | Requirement / test |
|---|---|---|
Grade 4.0 | Highest linear-symbol quality. | Scan-profile and overall grade. |
Grades 3.0, 2.0, 1.0 | Descending continuous quality bands. | Profile grades averaged across the specified scans. |
Grade 0.0 | Failing barcode quality. | Decode or another governing parameter fails. |

ISO 15416 — frequently asked
What does a 4.0 grade mean?
It is the highest print-quality grade. A 0.0 result is failing.
Does ISO 15416 test label adhesion?
No. It evaluates optical barcode quality; adhesive bond and ink adhesion require separate tests.
Why must aperture and wavelength be stated?
Different apertures and illumination can produce different grades on the same symbol. A numeric grade alone is not reproducible.
