ASTM A564
Standard Specification for Hot-Rolled and Cold-Finished Age-Hardening Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes
Specification for hot-rolled and cold-finished age-hardening (precipitation-hardening) stainless steel bars, shapes and forging stock — Types 630 (17-4PH), 631 (17-7PH), 632, 634, 635, 660 (A-286) and the XM grades (XM-12 15-5PH, XM-13 PH13-8Mo, XM-16, XM-25) — including the heat-treat conditions and minimum properties for each.
What ASTM A564 specifies
ASTM A564 is the industrial specification for precipitation-hardening stainless bar and shapes. Material is supplied solution annealed (Condition A) unless a hardened condition is ordered, and the tables define, for each type and condition, the ageing treatment and the minimum tensile, yield, elongation, reduction of area and hardness. For Type 630 (17-4PH, UNS S17400): H900 190/170 ksi and 388 HB / 40 HRC; H925 170/155 ksi; H1025 155/145 ksi and 35 HRC; H1075 145/125 ksi; H1100 140/115 ksi; H1150 135/105 ksi and 28 HRC; H1150M 115/75 ksi; H1150D 125/105 ksi; Condition A hardness is 363 HB maximum. Type 660 (A-286) has its own solution-and-age treatments, and the semi-austenitic Types 631 and 632 use the TH1050 and RH950 conditions. General requirements come from ASTM A484 and test methods from ASTM A370. The purchaser specifies type or UNS number, condition (A or an H condition) and whether the mill or the user performs the age.

ASTM A564 — frequently asked
Can I order bar already in H1025?
Yes; A564 lets the mill supply hardened conditions, but most users buy Condition A (363 HB maximum) and age after machining because the age moves dimensions predictably and a 35–40 HRC bar machines slowly. Ordering hardened stock makes sense for small parts finished by grinding.
What do H1150M and H1150D add over H1150?
H1150M inserts a 1400 °F (760 °C) 2 h step before the 1150 °F age, giving the toughest and most SCC-resistant 17-4PH (115/75 ksi with 18 % elongation); H1150D double-ages at 1150 °F for 125/105 ksi. Both are used for valve bodies and pressure parts; NACE MR0175 accepts 17-4PH only in the H1150D or H1150M conditions at 33 HRC maximum.
Is A564 the same as AMS 5643?
Same alloy and the same minimum properties for Type 630; AMS 5643 adds aerospace melting, macrostructure and lot-response controls and invokes AMS 2750 pyrometry. Either works for industrial machined parts; aerospace and defence drawings require the AMS document.
Which condition for corrosion service?
Stress-corrosion resistance improves as the ageing temperature rises: H900 is generally avoided in chloride or hydrogen environments, H1025 is the practical minimum, and the H1150 family is preferred for marine and sour service. The 33 HRC hardness ceiling in most corrosion standards can only be met by H1150, H1150M or H1150D.
