Working with E6010-SR
Is E6010 easy to machine?
The deposit is soft low-carbon steel and turns or mills normally, but the bead surface is rough and may contain minor porosity. Grind and dress the weld before finish machining.
Can E6010 be welded?
Use DCEP (DC+) only with a short arc and no weaving; the deep-penetrating arc suits pipe root passes and vertical-down welding. Diffusible hydrogen is high, so switch to low-hydrogen E7018 for fill and cap on heavy wall or higher-strength steel. Electrodes are not baked; only short low-temperature drying if they have absorbed moisture.
Can E6010 be formed, bent or molded?
The electrode itself is not a formed product. Cold bending of weldments should avoid the weld and heat-affected zone; as-welded elongation is about 22–28 %.
What surface finishes work on E6010?
Grind off slag and dress undercut after welding, then blast and apply primer or epoxy coating, or hot-dip galvanize. Anodizing is not applicable.

E6010-SR — frequently asked
What is E6010-SR used for?
E6010-SR is typically used for cross-country pipeline welding, root passes, field construction and vertical-down welding. In short: deepest penetration stick electrode; pipeline root pass standard; DC+ only, high hydrogen.
What is the yield strength of E6010-SR?
E6010-SR has a typical yield strength of 370 MPa (53.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi) — weaker than 70% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.
Is E6010-SR easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (64/100, better than 92% of steel grades). The deposit is soft low-carbon steel and turns or mills normally, but the bead surface is rough and may contain minor porosity. Grind and dress the weld before finish machining.
Can E6010-SR be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100).
What surface finishes work on E6010-SR?
Grind off slag and dress undercut after welding, then blast and apply primer or epoxy coating, or hot-dip galvanize. Anodizing is not applicable.
Can E6010-SR be formed, bent or molded?
The electrode itself is not a formed product. Cold bending of weldments should avoid the weld and heat-affected zone; as-welded elongation is about 22–28 %.
What is the maximum service temperature of E6010-SR?
E6010-SR is rated for continuous use to about 425°C (797 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between E6010-AW and E6010-SR?
AW is the default condition — use the as-welded, undiluted deposit condition for pipeline root passes, vertical-down welding, tanks and field structural steel where no post-weld heat treatment is applied. SR: choose the stress-relieved deposit (PWHT at about 600–650 °C) when codes such as ASME B31.3/B31.4 demand it: strength drops slightly while ductility, toughness and hydrogen escape improve. Yield strength is 400 MPa in AW versus 370 MPa in SR.
